born Feb. 20, 1910, Dorking, Surrey, Eng. died July 12, 1988, London British artist, founding member of the British Surrealist group in the 1930s, who often infused his work with a sense of humour and fantasy. While attending the University of Cambridge (192830), Trevelyan became so impressed by the dreamlike imagery of French Surrealism that he went to Paris to study at Stanley William Hayter's printmaking workshop, Atelier 17 (193134). Trevelyan exhibited Surrealist paintings and collages in a one-man show in London in 1935, and the next year he participated in the London International Surrealist Exhibition. After serving as a camouflage officer during World War II, Trevelyan taught at the Chelsea School of Art (195060) and the Royal College of Art (195563). His later work displayed a marked move toward primitivism. He wrote several books, including an autobiography, Indigo Days (1957).
