Jan. 26, 1752, Rome, Papal States ), French Rococo painter known for his tableaux de mode, or scenes of the life of the French upper class and aristocracy, especially during the period of the regencye.g., Hunt Breakfast (1737; Wallace Collection, London) and Luncheon with Oysters (1735; Cond Museum, Chantilly, Fr.). As a youngster he studied with his father, Franois de Troy (16451730), a portrait painter from Toulouse, but moved to Italy at 14 years of age. He designed two large series of tapestries for the Gobelins, served as director of the French Academy in Rome for several years, and was famous as a portraitist and decorator.
