city, western So Paulo estado (state), Brazil, situated in the highlands at 1,676 feet (511 m) above sea level, between the Peixe and Tiet rivers. The settlement was given town status in 1936 and was made the seat of a municipality in 1938. Economic activity in Tup centres on the processing of products from the hinterland, including cotton, coffee, rice, and timber. The city is linked by road, railway, and air to So Paulo, 260 miles (420 km) southeast. Pop. (1980 prelim.) 44,450.
