Meaning of UMEA in English

town and capital of Vsterbotten ln (county), northeastern Sweden. It lies on the left bank of the Ume River near the Gulf of Bothnia. It has long been an educational and cultural centre for northern Sweden. In 1622 it was incorporated by Gustav II Adolf. After suffering several destructive fires, especially in 1888, it was largely rebuilt. It is a commercial centre and port and manufactures furniture and machinery; it also has sawmills, the products of which are exported from its foreport, Holmsund. Ume University (1965) has a sizable school of medicine. An open-air museum in the town has exhibits and collections illustrating the area's past. Pop. (1994 est.) mun., 97,190.
