also spelled Umnaq, or Umanak, inlet of Baffin Bay and town, western Greenland, north of Nuussuaq Peninsula, separated from Karrat Isfjord by Upernivik and Ubekendt islands. About 100 miles (160 km) long and 1530 miles (2448 km) wide, Uummannaq divides into several smaller fjords extending eastward to the inland ice cap, where they are fed by extensive glaciers. Qarajaqs Isfjord is its most southerly arm. The town of Uummannaq (founded 1763) is on a small island just north of Nuussuaq Peninsula. A hunting and fishing base, it has a hospital and a weather and radio station. Pop. (1991 est.) Uummannaq town, 1,420.
