town and concelho (township), Porto district, northwestern Portugal. It lies on the south bank of the Douro River directly across from the city of Porto. In its many armazns (great wine lodges), port is matured and blended. The town's other economic pursuits include pottery, footwear, and textiles; there are also cork-processing factories and distilleries. Pop.
