WATTEAU, (JEAN-)ANTOINE

born Oct. 10, 1684, Valenciennes, Fr. died July 18, 1721, Nogent-sur-Marne French painter who typified the lyrically charming and graceful style of the Rococo. Much of his work reflects the influence of the commedia dell'arte and the opra ballet (e.g., "The French Comedy," 1716).
