It also includes schools of medicine, business administration, law, and social work. It offers a wide range of programs and awards 14 undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees. The university operates eight extension centres in Michigan. The libraries at Wayne State house over 2.7 million books. Reuther Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs, the Addiction Research Institute, and the Center for the Study of Arts and Public Policy are among its research units. Total enrollment is approximately 30,000. Wayne State University was formed in 1933 from the merger of several established colleges in Detroit. The oldest of these antecedents was the Detroit Medical College, founded in 1868 and now the School of Medicine. Detroit Teachers College (founded in 1881) and the College of the City of Detroit (founded in 1917) were also important antecedents of Wayne State. After the merger, the university was known as Wayne University, for Wayne county, which had been named for the American general "Mad" Anthony Wayne. It became Wayne State University in 1956.
