Meaning of WESTBURY in English

town (parish), West Wiltshire district, administrative and historic county of Wiltshire, southern England. It was noted as Westberie a royal manor in Domesday Book (1086), the record of the land survey ordered by William the Conqueror. The first mention of the town as a borough occurs in 144243, but its borough status was lost in 1886. The nearby Westbury White Horsea figure, of unknown origin, of a giant horse cut in a chalk hillsidewas reshaped in 1873. All Saints' Church in the town is Norman, with later additions. Westbury is a railway junction. Its industries include the manufacture of cloth, gloves, and leather. Pop. (1991) 11,863.
