city, Orange county, central Florida, U.S., just north of Orlando. In 1881 Loreing A. Chase and O.E. Chapman purchased 600 acres (240 hectares) of land on the site and laid out a town that they called Winter Park. The loose-skinned mandarin-type Temple orange was first cultivated there. The founding (1885) of Rollins College gave impetus to the community's growth. A chain of four lakes with boating and fishing facilities is within the city, which is now primarily a residential resort. Inc. town, 1887; city, 1925; rechartered 1949. Pop. (1990) 22,242.
