breed of sporting dog developed as an all-purpose hunting dog by E.K. Korthals, of The Netherlands, around the end of the 19th century. It was bred to point and to retrieve both on land and in water, and it is generally a slow, deliberate hunter. Ideally a vigorous, strong-limbed dog with a rugged constitution, the wirehaired pointing griffon stands about 20 to 24 inches (50 to 60 cm) and weighs 45 to 60 pounds (20.5 to 27 kg). It is bushy-browed and has a harsh, unkempt-looking coat in various combinations of gray, white, and chestnut brown.
