Her books helped to spread the influence of the Oxford Movement, which sought to bring about a return of the Church of England to the High Church ideals of the late 17th century. Her first success came with The Heir of Redclyffe (1853), whose hero made goodness attractive and romantic. Her other novels include Heartsease (1854); The Daisy Chain (1856), which depicts the moral conflict of sheltered lives; and The Young Stepmother (1861).
