city, Gdansk wojewdztwo (province), north-central Poland. The city is located near picturesque Lake Zarnowieckie, 30 miles (48 km) northwest of Gdansk, the provincial capital. Zarnowiec is the site of a hydroelectric-power plant and a Benedictine monastery founded in the early 12th century. In a forest outside Zarnowiec, 12,000 Poles were executed and buried in mass graves by German troops in World War II. Pop. (1980 est.) 5,000.
