ZEIST

gemeente (commune), Utrecht provincie, central Netherlands. Since 1746 it has been the headquarters of the Dutch Province of the Moravian Church, a Protestant refugee group from Herrnhut (Saxony), which bought the 17th-century Zeist castle. Zeist is mainly a residential and resort town in a wooded region; it has some industry, producing optical instruments and gold and silverware. Pop. (1993 est.) 59,096.
