ZYGOMYCETES

Meaning of ZYGOMYCETES in English

class of fungi (division Mycota) characterized by sexually produced, resting spores (zygospores). Asexual reproduction occurs by the formation of nonmotile spores (aplanospores) in fruiting bodies (sporangia). Members of this class are saprobes (obtain their food from dead organic material) or are parasites of plants or animals. Included in the class is the common bread mold fungus, Rhizopus. R. stolonifer (nigricans), a common parasite of mature fruits and vegetables, causes food spoilage. It is used in the manufacture of alcohol and organic acids. Pilobolus is found living on dung; it forcibly discharges its reproductive spores upward to 1.8 m (6 feet), hence its common name hat thrower or shotgun fungus. The Entomophthorales are parasitic on insects, and the Zoopagales parasitize nematodes, rotifers, and other small animals.
