( in Britain ) a small piece of land that a person can rent from the local council for growing vegetables, flowers, etc. Allotments are usually grouped together in a large field in a town or city. In the 19th century and during the two world wars, many people used their allotments to feed their families. Working on an allotment is now a popular way of relaxing.
