I . Elizabeth Garrett Anderson

(1836–1917)

the first British woman doctor, who fought for the right of other women to become doctors after struggling to get her own medical qualifications in 1865. Later she set up a hospital where women could be treated by women. In 1908 she also became the first woman mayor of an English town.

II . Lindsay Anderson

(1923–94)

an English theatre and film director. His film If... (1968) is a powerful comment on the British public school system.

III . Marian Anderson

(1902–93)

a US singer. In 1939 she was prevented from entering a hall to give a concert by the Daughters of the American Revolution because she was black, so she gave a free concert from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial . In 1955, she became the first black singer to perform at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

IV . Sherwood Anderson

(1876–1941)

a US writer. His most successful collection of short stories was Winesburg, Ohio (1919) about the dull life of a small town. His novels included Poor White (1920) and Dark Laughter (1925).
