Meaning of ARNOLD in English

I . Benedict Arnold

(1741–1801)

an American general who betrayed his country in the American Revolution . Although at first he fought bravely and won battles for the Americans, he tried in 1780 to give the fort at West Point , which he commanded, to the British. He failed and escaped to London. His name is still used by Americans to mean somebody who betrays their country.

II . Malcolm Arnold

(1921– )

a British composer who has written several symphonies, as well as music for ballets and films. He was made a knight in 1993.

III . Matthew Arnold

(1822–88)

an English poet and critic, son of Thomas Arnold . He wrote several collections of poetry, and important essays about education and social and political life in Britain. His best-known poems are Dover Beach and The Scholar-Gypsy .

IV . Thomas Arnold

(1795–1842)

headmaster of Rugby School (1828–42). He introduced many changes that influenced the development of public school (1) education in Britain. Matthew Arnold was his son.
