Meaning of AUTHORIZED VERSION in English

( abbr the AV ) ( also the King James Version )

an English translation of the Bible that was ordered by King James I for use in churches. It was first published in 1611 and became the main English version of the Bible. In the 20th century more modern translations were made, but many Anglican churches continue to use the Authorized Version, and many people still prefer its old-fashioned language.
