a type of jazz music that was especially popular in the 1940s and 1950s. It emphasizes the creative playing of individual musicians in small groups. Famous players include ‘Dizzy’ Gillespie , Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker and Thelonious Monk . The music again became popular in the 1990s because of musicians like the trumpet player Wynton Marsalis .
