a British Labour politician who became Prime Minister after the election of 1 May 1997, with a very large Labour majority in Parliament. After becoming the leader of the Labour Party in 1994, he had made major changes to its organization, calling it New Labour . He got rid of the old image of Labour as a party controlled by the trade unions, and one which rejected the idea of individuals getting more private wealth, having more personal choices about education, health care, etc. In 2001 his government was elected for a second term of office.
