Meaning of BONNY PRINCE CHARLIE in English

(1720–88)

the popular name of Prince Charles Edward Stuart, also sometimes called the Young Pretender . His father was the son of James II , the king of England, Scotland and Ireland, and Charles therefore believed that his father should be king. Many people in Scotland supported the Stuarts, and in 1745 Charles led a Scottish army against King George II . After some successes, Charles’s army was defeated at the battle of Culloden . He then spent five months hiding from government soldiers in Scotland before escaping to France. He never returned to Britain.
