any of a group of British high-street shops selling men’s clothes which are not very expensive. There are Burton shops in most British towns.

II . Richard Burton

(1821–90)

an English writer and explorer. He travelled to India, Arabia and several African countries, and learnt many languages so that he could talk to local people and write about their cultures and traditions. He is also well known for his translation of the Arabian Nights . He was made a knight in 1886.

III . Richard Burton

(1925–84)

a Welsh actor. He first became famous for his performances of Shakespearian roles in the theatre, and in the 1960s and 1970s he acted in many major British and US films. He was also well known for his relationship with Elizabeth Taylor . They were married and divorced twice, and acted in several successful films together, including Cleopatra and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? .

IV . Robert Burton

(1577–1640)

an English academic at Oxford University who is best known for writing The Anatomy of Melancholy (1621), an academic study of depression, its history and effects.
