( in the US ) the system of transporting children in buses from their homes to schools in a different area, in order to achieve a greater mixture of races in schools. Usually African-American children travel to schools in white areas. This began in 1954 and was approved by the US Supreme Court in 1971. Many white parents moved out of cities to avoid bussing.
