an English film actor, well known for his cockney accent. He became famous in the 1960s when he was the main actor in films such as The Ipcress File (1965), Alfie (1966) and Get Carter (1971). Since then he has acted in over 100 British and US films and has won Oscars for Hannah and her Sisters (1986) and Cider House Rules (2000). He was made a knight in 2000.
