I . Edward Carson

(1854–1935)

an Irish politician and lawyer, well known as the lawyer who questioned Oscar Wilde at his trial in 1895. He was against Home Rule in Ireland, and led the Northern Irish opposition to it. He was made a knight in 1900 and a life peer in 1921.

II . Johnny Carson

(1925– )

a US television star who presented The Tonight Show for 30 years (1962–92). He was known for his friendly personality and easy style. Each programme was introduced with the words ‘Here’s Johnny!’.

III . Kit Carson

(1809–68)

a US explorer, guide and army officer in the American Wild West . He was an Indian agent (= a government official dealing with Native Americans) in 1853 and was in the Union army during the Civil War . Carson City, Nevada , is named after him.

IV . Rachel Carson

(1907–64)

a US scientist and author. Her book Silent Spring (1963), about the threat to animals from farm chemicals, helped to change the way such chemicals are used. She also wrote The Sea Around Us (1951).

V . Willie Carson

(1942– )

a British jockey, born in Scotland. He is one of the most successful jockeys of all time, winning most of the important British races. He retired from racing in 1997.
