the US government organization that gathers information and does research on foreign governments and operations. In the 1960s it changed its methods of operating, after being criticized in the US for trying to influence or remove foreign governments. It was established in 1947 and is based in Langley, Virginia . It publishes the CIA World Factbook every year, which gives information about all the countries in the world.
