a US sweet fizzy drink (= one containing many bubbles). It was invented in 1886 by Dr John S Pemberton, a pharmacist (= a person trained to prepare medicines) in Atlanta , who said it would cure feelings of sickness in the stomach or the head. Coca-Cola was originally made with cocaine, but this was replaced by caffeine in 1906. It is sold in cans and bottles and is bought more than any other product in the world.
