a British company that made successful racing cars in the 1950s and 1960s. It is best known for making the Mini Cooper, a sports-car version of the original Mini .
II . Gary Cooper
(1901–62)
a US film actor who is most remembered for his roles in westerns as a strong, silent hero. These included High Noon (1952) for which he received an Oscar . He received another for playing a soldier in Sergeant York (1940). He also had comic roles, as in Mr Deeds Goes to Town (1936). Cooper was given a special Oscar in 1961.
III . Henry Cooper
(1934– )
a popular English boxer who was twice the British heavyweight champion (1959–69 and 1970–71). He is remembered in Britain for having knocked down Muhammad Ali , although he lost the contest and never became world champion. He was made a knight in 2000.
IV . James Fenimore Cooper
(1789–1851)
the first major US writer of novels. He wrote mostly about frontiersmen and Native Americans. His best-known books include The Last of the Mohicans (1826) and The Deerslayer (1841). He also wrote novels about sailors and histories of the US Navy.
V . Tommy Cooper
(1921–84)
an English comedian who performed magic tricks as part of his act. He was well known for wearing a fez (= a small red traditional Turkish hat) and saying ‘Just like that’ when his tricks went wrong, as they often did.
