a play ( c. 1608) by Shakespeare about Caius Martius Coriolanus, a successful military leader in ancient Rome. He is sent away from Rome because he is too proud, and joins the enemy, bringing an army to attack Rome. The Romans send his mother, wife and son to persuade him not to attack, and Caius Martius is killed by the enemy.
