an expensive make of car formerly produced in Coventry , England. The company was formed in 1896 and was named after the German designer of the original engine, Gottfried Daimler. Daimlers are typically associated with rich upper-class people in Britain, and with the British royal family, who have owned several. In 1960 the Daimler company was sold to Jaguar , which continued to use the name Daimler on some of its more expensive cars. A separate German company, Daimler-Benz, joined with Chrysler in 1998 to form DaimlerChrysler.
