II . Kirk Douglas
(1916– )
a US film actor well known for playing tough characters. His films include Lust for Life (1956), Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1957) and Spartacus (1960). In 1990 Douglas received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute and in 1996 a special Oscar for his 50 years in films. He has also written the story of his life and several novels. His son is the actor Michael Douglas .
III . Lord Alfred Douglas
(1870–1945)
the young English aristocrat who was Oscar Wilde’s lover when Wilde was arrested and sent to prison for homosexuality, which was illegal at that time. The long letter that Wilde wrote in prison, published later as De Profundis (1897), was addressed to Douglas.
IV . Michael Douglas
(1944– )
a US film actor well known for playing strong, emotional characters. He received an Oscar for his role as a tough financial expert in Wall Street (1987). His other films have included Fatal Attraction (1987), The War of the Roses (1989), Basic Instinct (1992) and The Game (1997). He married Catherine Zeta-Jones in 2000. He is the son of the actor Kirk Douglas .
V . Stephen Douglas
(1813–61)
a US politician who defeated Abraham Lincoln in 1858 for the US Senate but lost to him in the 1860 election for US President . The Lincoln-Douglas debates are famous in US history. Douglas’s Kansas-Nebraska Act allowed new states to choose whether they wanted slaves. He had the popular name of the ‘Little Giant’.
