(1943– )
an English theatre, film and television director. His work includes the films The Ploughman’s Lunch (1983), Iris (2001) and successful stage productions of Guys and Dolls (1982) and Richard III (1990). He was artistic director of the National Theatre from 1988 to 1997, and has published National Service (2003) a diary of these years as well as a guide to twentieth century British theatre, Changing Stages (2000). He was made a knight in 1997.
