a US writer of novels, short stories and plays. Her long novels often tell stories spread over many years. So Big (1924), about rich families in Chicago , won the Pulitzer Prize , Giant (1952) was about Texas , and Show Boat (1926), about a Southern family, became a successful Broadway musical play. All three were made into films. Ferber also wrote plays with George Kaufmann, including Dinner at Eight (1932).
