a character in humorous cartoons by Jim Davis that appear in more than 2 000 newspapers. Garfield is a cat that eats lasagne (= a type of pasta). There was a film Garfield in 2004 and there have also been many cartoon film versions.

the 20th US President , and a member of the Republican Party . He had been a US Army general in the Civil War . Four months after becoming President he was shot by a disappointed person who had wanted a government job.
