GETTYSBURG

a major battle (1–3 July 1863) during the American Civil War which helped the US to win the war. More soldiers died than in any other battle in US history. It was fought in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania , between the southern forces under General Robert E Lee and the US soldiers led by General George Mead. Over 40 000 men on both sides were killed or wounded, and the battle ended as a major victory for the North.
