Gilbert was born in Italy and studied in Austria and Germany. In the 1960s and 1970s they presented themselves as works of art by covering their bodies with paint or powder to look like sculptures. Their film Gordon’s Makes Us Drunk shows them drinking Gordon’s gin. They are well known for producing large photographs of themselves, often referring to themes of sex and politics, which many people found shocking. They are usually seen wearing matching business suits.
