Meaning of GREENWICH VILLAGE in English

( also The Village )

a district of Manhattan (1) where many artists, writers and students live and meet in the galleries, cafés, bars and clubs there. It was associated with the beat generation . In 1969 the Stonewall riots, which marked the beginning of the gay liberation movement, took place there.
