a type of stout (= dark strong beer) first made in Dublin in 1759 by the Guinness company. It is very popular in Ireland, the only place where it was made until 1936:

II . Alec Guinness

(1914–2000)

an English actor who appeared in a wide variety of plays and films. Some of his best-remembered films were Ealing comedies , including Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949), in which he played eight parts, both male and female. He won an Oscar in 1957 for his part in The Bridge on the River Kwai . He also took the part of George Smiley in two television series based on novels by John Le Carré , and played Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars . He was made a knight in 1959.
