I . Averell Harriman
(1891–1986)
a US diplomat. He was the US ambassador in the Soviet Union (1943–6) and in Britain (1946). He was also the US Secretary of Commerce (1946–8) and governor of New York (1955–8). Harriman helped to carry out the Marshall Plan (1949–50) and to establish the Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty (1963). He was the main US representative at the Vietnam peace talks in Paris in 1968. His wife was Pamela Harriman .
II . Pamela Harriman
(1920–97)
a US ambassador in France (1993–7) who was an important fund-raiser for the Democratic Party . She was born in Britain as Pamela Beryl Digby, the daughter of an English Lord , and was regarded as one of the most beautiful women of her time. She was married three times and had many famous lovers. In 1939 she married Randolph Churchill, the son of Winston Churchill . Her third husband was Averell Harriman . After her death in France she was given the French Legion of Honour.
