a famous frontiersman in the American Wild West . His real name was James Butler Hickok. He worked as a marshal (= law officer) in several Kansas towns before joining Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show (1872–4). He then moved to Deadwood, South Dakota , where he was shot in the back and killed while playing cards.
