Meaning of HIGH SHERIFF in English

a representative of the King or Queen in each of the counties in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The position is an honorary (= unpaid) one and has existed since 995. The High Sheriff is appointed each year from among the local people and the duties include acting as the representative of the Queen or King in matters of law and order.
