( HMV Group plc )
a British company started in 1921 that sells recordings of music and books. HMV stands for ‘His Master’s Voice’, and the company used to use on its record label a picture of a small dog listening to an old-fashioned gramophone (= a machine for playing records with a large horn to produce the sound). HMV also owns the Waterstone’s bookshops. It was part of the EMI group until 1998.
