Meaning of HOBBES in English

(1588–1679)

an English philosopher who developed a range of theories about nature, human behaviour and society. He did not believe in God and thought that the only way to hold society together was to have strong social institutions and a powerful ruler. His book Leviathan (1651) sets out these views.
