Meaning of HOLMES in English

I . Kelly Holmes

(1970– )

an English runner who runs in 800 metres and 1 500 metres races and who won gold medals at both distances at the 2004 Olympics.

II . Oliver Wendell Holmes

(1809–94)

a US doctor and writer of stories and poems. In 1857, they began to be published in The Atlantic Monthly magazine, and his famous ‘Breakfast Table’ conversations were later collected in several books. His poems include The Chambered Nautilus and Old Ironsides . Holmes also taught medicine at Harvard University (1847–82).

Holmes’s son, Oliver Wendell Holmes Junior (1841–1935), became one of the wisest and most respected judges on the US Supreme Court (1902–32).

III . Sherlock Holmes

a private detective in the stories of Arthur Conan Doyle . Holmes is able to solve crimes and mysteries using his powers of observation and deduction (= logical thought), sometimes without leaving his flat/apartment in Baker Street , and often to the amazement of the police and his friend Dr Watson . People often say, ‘Elementary, my dear Watson’, when they think that a problem is easy to solve, although Holmes never actually says this in any of the stories. He is often shown wearing a special type of hat called a deerstalker and smoking a curved pipe. He also plays the violin and sometimes takes drugs. The Sherlock Holmes stories are still very popular and have been filmed many times.
