a large dam on the Colorado River on the border of Nevada and Arizona . It was completed in 1935 and originally called Boulder Dam. In 1947 the name was changed in honour of the US President Herbert Hoover . It is 726 feet (221 metres) high and 1 244 feet (379 metres) wide, and it produces electricity for Arizona, Nevada and southern California .
