a famous poem (1804) by William Blake , later set to music by Hubert Parry (1848–1918). It expresses the hope for a future Christian society built in ‘England’s green and pleasant land’, and contains several phrases that have become well known, including ‘dark Satanic mills’ and ‘chariot of fire’. It is traditionally sung at the Last Night of the Proms as well as by Women’s Institutes and in churches.
