(1924– )
a novelist and screenwriter who was born in Germany, educated in England and then moved to India. Her novel about India, Heat and Dust (1975), won the Booker Prize and was also made into a film (1983). She has written a number of screenplays (= the script and instructions for actors in a film) for the film makers Ismail Merchant and James Ivory , including Howards End (1993) and A Room with a View (1987) for which she won an Oscar .
