an Irish writer who writes novels about political and cultural problems in Ireland. Her books include The Captains and the Kings (1972), How Many Miles to Babylon (1974), The Old Jest (1988), for which she won the Whitbread Book of the Year prize, and The Gingerbread Woman (2000).
