I . Janis Joplin
(1943–70)
a US singer popular in the 1960s, especially with hippies . Her voice was harsh, and she was known for her wild performances on stage. Her best-known songs include Piece of My Heart (1968), Try (1969) and Me and Bobby McGee (1971). She was chosen for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.
II . Scott Joplin
(1868–1917)
a US piano player who wrote and helped to develop ragtime music. His most popular tune was Maple Leaf Rag (1899). He also wrote the first African-American opera, Treemonisha (1911), but it was not successful. His music became popular again when some of his tunes, including The Entertainer (1902), were used in the film The Sting (1973).
